Frequently Asked Questions

Can I board my dog even if I don’t know how my dog will act around other dogs?

While there are many factors that influence your dogs behavior, we suggest a visit to daycare prior to your boarding date so we can evaluate your dog’s temperament. Your first visit/assessment is FREE. We will continue to monitor your dog throughout their stay and make any adjustments necessary. Guests staying at The Velvet Snout must possess a temperament that allows staff members to care for them. Allowances may be made for specific temperament issues, but the pet cannot pose a danger to staff members. If the guest is scheduled for daycare, they must not be aggressive toward people or other dogs

What if my dog doesn’t like other dogs?

We find that most of our guests play well with others; however, if your dog shows unfriendly behavior toward other dogs, they will not be able to participate in daycare. To accommodate these guests we offer walks and one on one outdoor play time with play/petting/throwing a ball/pool play.

How do you determine which dogs will do well together in daycare playgroups?

Playgroups are determined by a dog’s individual needs and personality. Important factors are age, size, weight, temperament and play style. We assess this through your Pet Profile and ongoing, close observation.

Can my pets stay in the same suite together?

We can accommodate two or more dogs in one suite together, depending on size. We do not currently offer this service for cats and dogs together due to varying safety and health requirements.

Can I bring my dog’s favorite toy?

You may absolutely bring your dog’s favorite toy; however, it must remain in the suite for your dog to enjoy when not in open play. If your dog should chew the toy up to a point we feel it would be dangerous if ingested, we will remove the toy for the remainder of their stay and return it to you when they go home.

Can I bring my own food?

The Velvet Snout actually prefers that you bring your own food so that each pet remains on their regular diet; however, we do provide a quality dog food for those that do not bring their own for $3 per dog, per day.

Do we have to bring our own bed?

The Velvet Snout provides bedding for all our guests. Each suite has a Kuranda cot style bed and we also have quilts, blankets and other bedding items available. If you would like to bring your own bedding, a special shirt or other favorite of your pet, you are welcome to do so as long as it fits inside a bag equivalent to a brown paper grocery store bag. Items can be rolled or folded to fit inside. Personal blankets should be free of holes that may allow the pet to become entangled.

Can you administer my pet’s medication while they are staying with you?

Almost all medications can be administered by our trained staff. We are not able to administer injectables such as insulin due to liability. We recommend a vet for these services.

What vaccinations will my pet need?

Your dog(s) should be current on rabies, Bordatella, and DHLPP vaccinations. Feline guests need to be current on rabies and FVRCp vaccinations.

How far in advance do I need to make a reservation?

Daycare reservations should be made a week in advance. Boarding reservations should be made two weeks in advance if at all possible. For Holidays we highly recommend 4 weeks or more in advance to ensure availability.

What if my pet isn’t spayed/neutered?

Un-spayed females are allowed to participate in daycare if they are not in heat. If they are in heat or come into heat during their stay at The Velvet Snout, they will stay in their suite and will receive at least 3 walks per day and individual attention/one on one play time in our outdoor play yard. Un-neutered males are taken on a case by case basis. If it is deemed they are not suitable for daycare, they can day board in a suite which will include 3 walks per day and one on one play time in our outdoor play yard.

How old does my pet need to be?

Guests must be 4 months or older to visit The Velvet Snout. Guests not meeting this requirement must be examined by their vet and receive a clearance of good health not more than 1 week prior to their stay. Guests younger than 4 months may not be allowed in playgroups due to size, temperament, and play style. Each guest will be evaluated per their needs.
