5 Basic Pet Training Tips

Having a pet dog is fun and exhilarating. However, when it comes to training your pet, you probably cannot say the same.

Accidents, biting, and bad behavior makes pet training very necessary. This is especially true if your pet lives on the inside of your home and you have frequent guests over. While there are professional pet trainers that can help you get control of your doggie, it is also important that to do the extra work when you are at home as well.
To help, here are five important tips you should exercise and keep in mind while your pet is going through training.

Tip #1: Listen to Your Dog

Although you want your dog to earn to listen to you, you must also listen to your doggie. You more than likely have learned when your dog is uncomfortable, and if not, you definitely will over time. This will come in handy for gauging when your dog is uncomfortable  and will be vital in making your pet training session successful. If your pet is super uncomfortable doing something, it is for good reason. Instead of completely pushing him to do the activity or interact, try finding a way to ease your dog into it instead.

Tip #2: Show Your Affection

When you are not happy with your dog, chances are he knows it without you even having to say a word. Why? It’s because of your body language because your body language is a tell-tale sign. It is important to remember this when you are happy with your pet too. If he does something good, be sure to show your dog that by giving him the attention he needs. This allows him to quickly realize when he’s being a good boy and when a behavior or action is good.

Tip #3: Tell Your Dog What He NEEDS to Do

Telling your pet “no” is not a bad thing. Eventually, he will instinctively learn what that word means. However, using the word alone will not explain to him what to do instead. For example, next time your dog jumps on you or your guest, instead of just saying “no” follow it up by saying “sit”. This helps avoid any confusion and will make pet training a bit easier for the both of you.

Tip #4: Be Very Consistent

Consistency is key when training your dog. This means that not only should you and your professional dog trainer be on the same page, but also everyone in your family too. Dogs learn fairly easily, however, if one person tells him not to jump on the bed, but another person allows him to do so, it is confusing. It is best to set clear rules and have everyone in the family abide by them at all times. No exceptions.

Tip #5: Set Realistic Expectations

Changing your dog’s behavior won’t happen overnight. It is going to take time and patience, so you will need to set real expectations during your pet’s training. It is also important for you to realize that some things are natural for a dog to do like barking, running and digging. While these are part of their natural instinct, your pet may be excessive and that can be corrected through training. As long as you remember to be patient with your dog and work with him throughout the process, certain behaviors can be changed.
